Transport is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide and within the screen industry. The Screen New Deal report shows that transport accounts for just over 50% of total emissions for tentpole productions. They report says ‘of this, 70% is associainted with land transport, and 30% with air travel’. And behind these figures is a ‘tendency for those who work in the industry to prioritise preparedness for unpredictable circumstances in the tight schedules that are typical of film production.’

Reducing these emissions involves complementary strategies widely recommended by international frameworks (eg the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s guidelines). These include reducing travel demand, using lower-carbon transport modes, switching to low-emission energy sources, and improving energy efficiency for example through eco-driving and right-sizing of company vehicles.

Each of these actions must be adapted to the local contexts in Scotland, especially in more remote and rural areas that may require different approaches. ‘What matters is not applying a single model, but recognizing that mobility is a powerful lever for climate action, when it is measured, understood, and integrated into everyday decisions.’ Green Animation Guide (PDF) page 78
