Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on earth and includes all living things from animals to plants and microorganisms. Biodiversity provides several benefits to human beings, many of which are vital to our survival – eg breathable air, food, materials and medicinal plants. The benefits of biodiversity rely on nature being diverse.

The screen industry’s impact on biodiversity occurs through production practices, location choices, the supply chain (eg materials sources for costumes, food and precious minerals for cameras), and the portrayal of biodiversity on screen. However, there are key opportunities for the screen industry to reduce its biodiversity impact and even contribute to nature recovery.

As said in the BAFTA Albert’s ‘Biodiversity & the screen industries: A guide for productions’ (PDF):

‘There are already laws that productions must follow in relation to biodiversity and, with increasing national and international commitments to protecting nature, new legislation and frameworks that will place requirements on our industry are forthcoming’.
