Communications

Actions for this theme are relevant for Production, Sustainability roles, and Talent and agents departments. We strongly encourage collaborating across departments and sharing knowledge to maximise the positive impact of your efforts and to avoid silo working.

Communications plays a key role in positively engaging all stakeholders throughout the screen industry, raising awareness, building capability and encouraging role-specific actions.

To support a more sustainable industry, communications need to be considered by the production department but also all heads of department. Heads of department need to make sure their department is engaged on sustainability and communicate with other departments to facilitate sustainability actions where relevant.

Ahead of shooting, the production’s sustainability approach and how it will be applied in practice should be explained to all cast, crew and suppliers. This can be done through the creation of a green memo. Regular sustainability meetings should be held with the cast, crew and heads of departments to continuously review best practices. Additionally, at the end of the shoot a final green memo should be distributed for feedback.

It is also important to consider communications in terms of the audience and wider industry. How you tell the story of the production’s approach to sustainability should be well thought through to maximise impact and influence. For example, creating social media assets that are visually appealing but also easily digestible and accessibleYou can also engage with industry bodies to develop case studies or obtain additional support (eg BAFTA AlbertBECTU VisionCulture for Climate Scotland, local screen bodies, local sustainability organisations).
